COSTUME OF KERALA
Kerala's costume culture is deeply rooted in its rich heritage and diverse traditions. It reflects the state's history, lifestyle, and cultural diversity, with a focus on simplicity and elegance. Textiles play an integral role in rituals, festivals (like Onam and Vishu), and temple traditions. The white and gold combination symbolizes purity and prosperity, aligning with Kerala's cultural ethos. Kerala's textile culture is not just about clothing but also about preserving an identity steeped in tradition, artistry, and sustainability. It continues to evolve, blending modern aesthetics while staying true to its roots.
Traditional Costume
Kasavu Saree and Mundu
The most iconic textile of Kerala is the Kasavu saree and Mundu (Dhoti). Kasavu refers to the golden or zari border that adorns these handwoven garments. Traditionally made from fine cotton, these garments are worn during festivals, weddings, and special occasions.
Neriyathum Mundu
A two-piece attire for women, it is considered the precursor to the modern saree. The lower garment (Mundu) is wrapped around the waist, and the upper cloth (Neriyathu) is draped over the shoulder.
Handloom Weaving
Handloom weaving is a significant part of Kerala's textile tradition, with hubs like Balaramapuram, Chendamangalam, and Kuthampully being famous for their exquisite handloom fabrics. These weaves are known for their durability, soft texture, and intricate designs, often featuring stripes and checks. Kerala's handloom industry emphasizes sustainable and eco-friendly practices, using natural dyes and materials.
Contemporary Influence
Modern adaptations include blending Kasavu designs with silk, chiffon, and synthetic fabrics for urban appeal. Designers often incorporate Kerala's motifs (e.g., coconut trees, Kathakali faces) into their creations. Traditional attires are often paired with gold jewellery, such as necklaces and bangles, highlighting the region's love for gold. Men's Mundu is often combined with simple shirts or kurtas.
