Chempara Peak<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chempara peak located 8 km south of Kalpetta town, is the highest peak in Wayanad. It is part of the majestic Western Ghats. You can reach there only by foot from Meppady, a small town near its valley. So naturally Chempara peak is a popular trekking trail in Kerala. One should get permission from the forest authorities before starting out.<\/p>\n<p>There is a small heart shaped lake on the way to the peak which is quite mesmerizing. Silent Valley National Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps one of the last unexplored part of tropical evergreen forest in India. Silent Valley is situated in Nilgiri hills, Palakkad.\u00a0 This site is part of the Western Ghat regions under consideration for <b>UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It was converted to national park in 1980 as a result of environmental social movement &#8220;Save Silent Valley&#8221; which was triggered by the proposal for a hydroelectric project here. It covers an area of 237. 52 Sq.km and\u00a0 shelters a rich mosaic of diverse habitats. You can have a 5 km ride splashing through the sea waves!<\/p>\n<p>The youth love this place and you can see many showing off their driving skills in cars and wheeling in bikes!! There is\u00a0 is a small private island named Dharmadam Island located there at just about 200\u00a0m south of the beach. In low tide, you can go there for a walk. Banasura Sagar Dam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Banasura Sagar dam nestled between the hill ranges of Banasura (part of Western Ghats), is built across the tributary of Kabini River in Wayanad. It is the largest earth dam in India and second largest in Asia. The small island formations in the dam reservoir covered in thick green foliage with the hill ranges in the background makes it truly breathtaking! Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This bird sanctuary is part of the dense tropical evergreen forest in Central Kerala. It is located at about 58 km from Kochi city. It is done in a very organized way under the full guidance of forest guards. The flow of the river might get strong all of a sudden and soon become uncontrollable. Hence the extra precautions and rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Veliyaparamba Backwaters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This backwater stretch is in Kasaragod, northern most district of\u00a0 Kerala. Cherai Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cherai beach is at the north western end of Vypin Island, in Ernakulam District (Cochin). The way to Cherai beach is dotted with many beautiful lagoons. These lagoons are now used for large scale organic prawn and fish cultivation. The beach stretches for 15 km (close to 10 miles) and is an ideal place for long walks and jogging. It is also ideal for swimming as the water is shallow near the beach. This backwater stretch is actually a confluence of two beautiful rivers- Killi and Karamana. Ponmudi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ponmudi or The Golden Peak, is one of the main hill stations in Trivandrum district. It is at an altitude of 1100m above sea level. It is part of the Western Ghats hill ranges. The very narrow roads with some 22 hairpin curves make the journey to the place quite adventuresome. Asthamudi Lake<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is in the Kollam district. Asthamudi lake is the second deepest lake in the state, the first being Vembanad lake. In Malayalam, &#8216;Asthamudi&#8217; means\u00a0 &#8216;eight coned&#8217;. It is an ideal place to enjoy houseboat cruise and simply a boat ride!<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. Thenmala<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thenmala is also in Kollam district, near Punalur township. The main attraction is the Thenmala dam, built across the Kallada river. Thenmala was recently converted to a eco-tourism destination enhancing its already existing nature resources. The rope bridge across the dam sways in the wind and is real fun crossing it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. Pookot Lake<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is located near Kalpetta, Wayanad district. It is a picturesque freshwater lake flanked by forests on all sides. The sight of the blue water lilies spread out on the lake make the visit worth while. A small children&#8217;s park and some refreshment stalls are also there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. Beypore Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beypore is a ancient port near Kozhikode (Calicut). It was one of those ports in Kerala where trading to Middle East used to be done. Beypore also has a beautiful beach and marina. There is a 2 km long stone bridge locally known as &#8216;Pulimuttu&#8217;\u00a0 stretching into the sea near the beach. Walking through the bridge to its end is simply awesome. You will feel like standing almost in the middle of the sea. Malampuzha Dam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malampuzha dam is located at about 10 kms from Palakkad town, Kerala. It is the largest reservoir is Kerala. Malmpuzha dam impounds the waters of Malampuzha River, a tributary of Bharathappuzha. Thusharagiri Waterfalls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term &#8216;Thusharagiri&#8217; means mountain covered with snow. Idukki Dam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Idukki dam is constructed between the two hills Kuravanmala and Kurathimala impounding\u00a0 the river Periyar.It is owned by the Kerala electricity board and supports Kerala&#8217;s major hydroelectric power station (780 MW). This is the biggest arch dam in Asia. The underground powerhouse at Moolamattom is about 43 kms from the dam. The water cascades down from a height of 100 ft in 5 small steps making Aruvikkuzhi, one of nature&#8217;s beautiful creations!<\/p>\n<p>It is ideal for trekking and rock climbing. Rubber plantations surround this charming waterfalls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21.
