The main\u00a0attraction in Pathiramanal is the boat ride, and birdwatching, especially in winter. There are about 90 species of birds and 50\u00a0migratory bird species here. Some of the commonly seen birds are Indian Shag, Purple Heron,\u00a0Indian Pond Heron, Little Egret,\u00a0Stork-billed Kingfisher,\u00a0Night Heron,\u00a0Watercock, Whistling Duck,\u00a0Pintail Ducks, Common Teal,\u00a0Intermediate Egret, Cattle Egret,\u00a0Cormorant, Darter, gulls, terns, large egrets,\u00a0Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Little Cormorant,\u00a0Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas,\u00a0and Whiskered Tern.<\/p>\n
A Little History about Pathiramanal<\/strong><\/h4>\nAs you know, Pathiramanal means midnight sand, and according to legends, the island was created magically in a single night by a\u00a0famous Brahmin and an ardent devotee Sree Guruvayoorappan,\u00a0Vilwamangalathu Swamiar. The holy one was traveling in a boat along Vembanad Lake when he wanted to answer the call of nature. For this reason, he created the island. Later, a landlord named Parayi Tharakan owned the island. The land was later purchased by a\u00a0Gujarati\u00a0trader, Bheemji\u00a0Devi, and then by a person called Chevalier ACM Anthraper.<\/p>\n
The island was converted into a coconut plantation that was looked after by 14\u00a0laborers and their families. Eventually, the laborers were\u00a0rehabilitated to\u00a0Muhamma Panchayat and the island was left deserted, and eventually, it became a haven for migratory birds. In 1979, the state government took over the island by imposing Land Reforms Act and then over to state tourism department.<\/p>\n

Eco-tourism<\/strong><\/h4>\nThe government has performed its bit in protecting the land. It has started a Pathiramanal Biodiversity Conservation and Responsible Eco-tourism Development Project to conserve the island by keeping it clean and protecting its plant and avian\u00a0species\u00a0while making it an important tourism\u00a0destination. Several rare and\u00a0threatened\u00a0plants grow on the island; many of them are medicinal too.<\/p>\n
